Unity Covenant

Preamble

Unity amongst all believers is Christ's desire and love is the root of true and lasting unity. Christian love is the fruit of walking in a living relationship with Jesus, and it is the proof that we are truly His disciples [John 13:34-35]. Jesus loved everyone He met, and.as Christian, we should strive to build and maintain loving unity with all true believers. Therefore, in order to achieve the unity that will transform the world, we commit ourselves wholeheartedly to this covenant that the grace, peace, power and love of Christ may flow freely between us and into our nation.

A covenant is a solemn commitment of trust, love, and devotion by one person to another. A covenant involves the commitment of the whole person to fulfill their commitment no matter the cost, and to sacrifice for the other person as a true act of love. Likewise, a covenant commitment should produce His life in our relationships because we are giving from our heart to the heart of another. Therefore, as you read this covenant commitment, you are agreeing to fulfill the commitments contained herein and will work to bring about unity among the believers in the Body of Christ wherever you live.

As a member of the Body of Christ, I want to walk in the footsteps of Jesus by building unity with my brothers and sisters in and through the love of Christ. I want to fulfill this covenant with other Christians because when we walk in loving unity with one another, the power of Satan will be broken and revival will be released to transform churches, believers, non-believers, cities and nations.

Jesus prayed, “Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are” [John 17:11]. Jesus prays to the Father that He will “keep” us in His name, that is, the Father will watch over us so that we can become one. He also prayed, “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are One; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity” [John 17:20-23]. Jesus is praying for His glory to come upon us that you and every believer will be completely united in order to achieve His goal of one Christian body in your community and beyond. Jesus began the work of unity and we are called to finish it so that we may be one just as He and the Father were, are and will always be one.

The Apostle Paul understood the vital importance of unity among believers and wrote that if we are united in His resurrection, our spiritual unity will bring life into our relationships [see Romans 6:5]. He also wrote that we should be united in “the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose” [Philippians 2:2]. We will do this when we “put on love which is the perfect bond of unity” which is the end goal of our coming together [Col. 3:14]. Finally, Paul instructs us to diligently “preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” because “there is [only] one body and one Spirit…one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all” [Ephesians 4:3-6]. We must vigilantly, eagerly and persistently maintain the unity of the Spirit and to not allow anything to hinder or divide us for any reason from one another.

The goal is to build unity and demonstrate love for one another. Therefore, we personally and individually make the following ten-part covenant:

Covenant Commitment:

1. Blessing: I covenant with my brothers and sisters to bless them by serving their needs as best I can. I covenant to respect each believer's unique personality and gifting, and ask that they do the same with me, and I covenant to serve them in love.

2. Fellowship: I covenant to openly fellowship with my brothers and sisters in Christ and praying for them, as well as inviting them to my home church, and sharing any material or spiritual resources that I can to help them as Christ would. Fellowship means to share what we have in common, so I covenant to open my heart and life to my brothers and sisters so that together we share in all that He has poured into us.

3. Community: I covenant to build a strong spiritual community with my brothers and sisters by maintaining strong personal relationships. I also covenant to resolve all differences and conflicts in a Christ-like manner so that the unity that binds us together and the love of the Holy Spirit in me will not be damaged or hindered in anyway. I covenant to work through all problems I have with any brothers and sisters, and to seek the assistance of other believers until we mutually resolve our differences. Christ is a uniter while Satan is a divider; therefore, I commit myself fully to Christ so that His prayer for unity will be fulfilled inme. Finally, I covenant to be held accountable so that I will stay on track with the Lord and not fall into any type of sin, whether hidden or obvious. I agree to allow my brothers or sisters to ask me personal questions about my walk with the Lord so that I can maintain personal holiness in my spirit, soul and body.

4. Communication: I covenant with my brothers and sisters to always be open, honest and truthful. I covenant to communicate in such as way that the truth will always be known, and to avoid any appearance of slanting or changing the truth in anyway. I desire that my communication will be loving, peaceful and fruitful in the lives of everyone I communicate with.

5. Unity: I covenant to walk in unity with my brothers and sisters and to build lasting relationships that will withstand any attacks. I covenant also to love and accept all believers just as Christ does. But when there is sin that can be confirmed by two or more witnesses, I will seek counsel, intervention, and prayer to resolve the matter so that unity will continue to grow and spread.

6. Prayer: I covenant to pray for my brothers and sisters, to pray for His Church in my local community and nation, and to pray for His will to be done daily in my life and the life of my nation. I also covenant to stand against the attacks of the devil against my brothers and sisters in Christ, and to uphold His grace.

7. Character: I seek to walk in the fruit of the Holy Spirit and to develop His character in my life, family and ministry. I specifically covenant to obey the New Testament “one another” passages published on this link so that I will treat others in the way that Christ would and to avoid doing the things that Christ has asked us not to do. I covenant to do this that I may be an example for others to follow and to call them to follow me as I follow Christ.

I Covenant to fulfill these goals in order to build unity in the Body of Christ and to see the Kingdom of God advance during my lifetime.
