Introduction to Leadership Lessons from 2 Corintians:

Leadership skills and abilities are learned and developed more than naturally inherent in most leaders. In fact, it is trustworthy to say that leaders simply are not born, but developed during a lifetime of experiences and learning. Leadership skills and abilities may appear in seed form in a potential leader, but they are like diamonds in the rough, present but deeply hidden, unpolished and in need of much cleaning. Therefore, leaders must go through a process of development over a period time, as well as through different experiences so that their skills and abilities are molded through trials and tests that allow them to become true leaders, or to shy away from leadership roles if they are not willing to pay the price or grow up. The difficult periods of life and ministry are typical tests or proving grounds to see if a “potential” leader has the characteristics and stamina of a true leader, or are they just a follower who happens to be in front of others. Many times potential leaders look good in the easy times, sound solid and seem to stand head and shoulders above others, but in fact their real character roots are immature and underdeveloped; hence, who and what they really are is revealed under adverse pressure, and it’s not pretty. Because God is in control of all things, he allows pressures to come into our life in order to bring to the surface character qualities and traits that need refining or strengthening before they are fully released into a leadership position. These pressures will either crush those who do not and will not develop as leaders, or confirm those who simply need more development.
